| Oddly named, "grotesques" are extraordinarily enchanting designs that were painted on ceilings and walls throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. Imaginative and whimsical,they combine mythological,allegorical and fantastic elements and figures in arabesques. Taken from the classical world of ancient Romans,they were inspired and based on designs found in wall decorations in underground grottos ("alla grottesca")and represented the spirit of that society,displaying its sense of well being and its carefree enjoyment life. |
