One of the earliest printed toiles discovered was produced in Ireland circa 1752. However, the technique of printing with fine line engraved plates came to its zenith in France in the third and fourth quarters of the 18th century.
Chinoiserie designs by the artist Pillement became fashionable through the influence of the court of Louis XV, when his mistresses invested in the French East India Trading Company. Madame du Pompadour was a clever investor, and wanted to make her investment pay, therefore she promoted this new court fashion.
