Hand painted designs on canvases, for use as furnishing fabric, were much employed during the 18th century. Sometimes limited budgets were the motivating element for creating a canvas, but more often they were created for the artistic enjoyment of the process. These canvases were employed as screens, bed hangings, draperies, and furniture coverings but also to cover walls. The heavy pigments used would wear away in places with time & flake off, creating a look of faded grandeur.
Desmond Guinness embarked on a crusade in the 1960's to preserve Ireland's brilliant decorative heritage founding the Irish Georgian Society and making his life's work the preservation of this enlightened decorative period.
