THE PROCESS OF MAKING MATMEE, OR THAI IKAT
The process of making Matmee (Thai Ikat) commences with the winding of a single raw silk thread into the disired amount of ends and quantity. Once this is completed the matmee designer then tyes these bindings tghtly together in specific areas. This process needs to be exact as it is where the pattern is determened.
These threads are then dyed in a light colour. Once this has dryed, more tyes are made and then dyed in a darker colour.
This process is repeated untill the final dye colour is applied. The tyes are then removed to reveal the striped threads.
These threads are then wound onto individual spools in preperation for the weaving.
The weaving process is where the pattern starts to form.
